Thanks Dad, and Thank You Sons
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice:
and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
Yesterday was my father’s birthday. He was born on November 13 in 1913, and God called him to Glory on November 3, 1993, just 10 days short of his 80th birthday. Some people believe the number 13 is bad luck; but for my life the number 13 always represented something good. My dad came from a large family who were mostly railroaders; and were it not for my dad’s refusal, I might have become a railroader as well.
Yesterday I did the same thing I have done for many years. I will put on some of my dad’s clothes. They don’t fit me anymore, but I will wear something of his for a short time. It reminds me that I have stepped into his shoes and I have taken his place. When my father passed away, there were two railroad watches that he possessed. One belonged to my grandpa, who worked on the Nickel Plate Railroad for 40 years. The other watch was my dad’s. My older brother kept my father’s watch, and I received Grandpa’s. Yesterday, I wound up the old Hamilton and let it tick down again, reminding me that my clock is also ticking.
I remember some of those holidays when Grandpa came to our house for the meal. I never saw my grandmother as she passed before I was born. When Grandpa died, I saw my father take his place. When he passed away, I saw my older brother fill the role. My brother was such a great man and filled the role with honor. He has been gone for several years now, and I have noticed how I have followed in their train. I pray that I can become an honorable man and do as much good for others as they did.
With all of that meandering, I just wanted to say how thankful I am for family. We see the deterioration of the family unit in our society. I thank God for the blessings of our family. How thankful I am for my mother and my father, an honorable brother, a wonderful wife, five sons and their wonderful wives, and our 11 grandchildren. How could anything improve on such blessings? Thank you, God, and thank you, Dad, for what you have given to me. Oh, how I pray that I might give my sons and their families the blessings that I have received.
